In Between Pugliese and D'Arienzo
Posted by Leslie Henslee on
Now for our musical interlude. Pugliese, Gardel and D'Arienzo were all born in December - making it the tango-iest month of the year. If you visit almost any street fair in Buenos Aires, you are bound to come across the face of Carlos Gardel, usually surrounded by firulete. A handsome singer, composer and actor, Gardel is the poster boy of Argentinian Tango Singers, having written several classics. It is widely believed he was born in Toulouse, France, on Dec 11, 1890. He grew up with his single mother and despite her resistance, started singing at parties, political meetings, restaurants and bars in his teens.
Some of these venues were a little rough. In 1915, after a theater performance, Gardel was shot in the lung by Ernesto Guevara Lynch (the father of the Ernesto Che Guevara) after bar room argument. The bullet was lodged in his lung for the rest of his life, but that didn't stop his career. Gardel went on to become the most famous figure in the history of Tango. You can check out his iconic crooning here.
