How to Share Yerba Mate the Traditional Argentine Way

Posted by Leslie Henslee on

In Argentina, sharing a yerba mate circle is a cherished tradition that brings friends and family together. This daily ritual is a moment to relax, connect, and enjoy each other's company. Here’s how to prepare and share mate the traditional way:

Steps to Enjoying Yerba Mate

  1. Prepare the Mate: Fill a thermos with hot water and prepare the yerba mate as described in our guide: How to Drink Yerba Mate.
  2. The First Sip: The cebador (server) takes the first sip to test the quality. They drink until the gourd is empty.
  3. Passing the Mate: The cebador refills the gourd and passes it counterclockwise, ensuring the straw (bombilla) faces the recipient.
  4. Drinking Etiquette: Each person drinks all the tea in one go until the straw gurgles, then returns the gourd for refilling.
  5. Avoid Stirring: Newcomers might be tempted to stir the bombilla, but this can clog the filter—so resist the urge!
  6. Repeat the Ritual: The cebador continues pouring and passing the mate until the water runs out or the yerba is lavado (washed out). Conversations flow naturally throughout the process.
