Moon Pies have been a Southern classic since 1917: two cookies filled with marshmallow and coated in chocolate. Originally created as a hearty snack for workers, they’ve become a cultural icon, especially at events like Mardi Gras. Their shape, flavor, and texture evoke nostalgia, joy, and community.
No Moon Pie? Try an Alfajor Instead
At Wooden Table Baking, we don’t sell Moon Pies but we do have something delightfully close: our handmade alfajores. Originally from South America, alfajores share the same idea: two soft cookies filled with something sweet, in our case, creamy dulce de leche and coated in delicious chocolate.
All our alfajores are handmade with traditional recipes, natural ingredients, and no preservatives. They’re a tribute to our Latin roots, with a homemade yet elegant twist.
How Are Moon Pies and Alfajores Different?
- We use creamy dulce de leche instead of marshmallow.
- Our cookies are soft, buttery shortbread—not crunchy graham.
- Our chocolate coating is rich and high-quality, not a candy glaze.
- Alfajores come from Latin America, while Moon Pies are born in the American South.
But they both have something in common: they're made to enjoy, share, and remember.
Celebration & Culture
Just like Moon Pies are tossed from floats during Mardi Gras, our alfajores are part of every celebration—from weddings and birthdays to corporate gifts and holiday parties. They’re a way to share tradition, flavor, and joy.
Closest Alfajor to a Moon Pie?
The one that most closely matches in structure and flavor is our Chocolate Alfajor: two shortbread cookies filled with dulce de leche and coated in rich chocolate.
The most different (but still delicious!)? Our Matcha Alfajor, with green tea flavor and a unique twist you won’t forget.
